Chapter Four

Heather

It wasn’t easy to finish out my shift and avoid questioning glances from Amie and Dave. I didn’t want to worry them. Luckily, I only had only a few hours left in my shift before I could head home for lunch to change my shirt. The spicy scent of Aaron’s jacket surrounded me, distracted me from my work and as much as I would have loved to stay wrapped up in it, I didn’t want it stained with various sauces and smelling like the grill in the back of the kitchen.

Despite the horrible thing that had just happened to me, I was on cloud nine as far as Aaron was concerned. I could feel the waves of emotion like an overflowing dam when he held me tight against his chest as I cried. Maybe some girls would have been afraid, after such an event, to be close to a man, but I knew Aaron wasn’t like that. He valued me enough to keep his touch platonic, even if he earlier he may have wanted something completely different.

Spring bloomed around me as I walked a few short blocks back to my house from the cafe. It was my favorite time of year. I liked to tend my herb garden and roses when the weather was nice like this. Unfortunately, I hadn’t had much time to do so since I was working so hard to juggle rent for both my brother and me. He had a great job, too, just a huge gambling problem that often left him strapped for cash. It started out small, but soon after mom died, it grew into a monster addiction.

I tried talking to him many times and he always promised me he’d quit...but usually he’d only last about a week until the rush of money from his paycheck was just too tempting. A frown touched my features. I wish I knew what to do...maybe there was an anonymous group that could help somewhere in the city. I knew my brother wanted to change, he just needed a bit of help.

Speak of the devil, I thought as I came up to the house to find the door already unlocked. It didn’t take long to find him. He had his head in his hands on the chair in the living room. It was a pose he often took when he was about to tell me something bad he’d done, like blowing through his entire paycheck in one night. This however...was so much worse.

He looked like it was going to take him a while to speak, so I rushed upstairs to change. I didn’t have another work shirt, so a plain white button-up over a white cami would have to do until I got a new one. I took the coat back downstairs and inspected it for stains. My brother still wasn't talking. It must be really bad. I took a breath and turned toward him. “Might as well tell me. It won’t get any easier.”

He didn’t look up with a guilty smile like he normally did.
